Users of Nelson Interchange may have noticed that since late last year the electronic display boards that gave information about bus and train times have no longer been working. This is because, as part of its budget savings, Lancashire County Council decided not to renew the contract to maintain the system.
Pendle Council’s Nelson Committee is currently considering the possibility of helping to maintain the systems with the co-operation of Lancashire County Council and possibly other interested parties.
The cost per year for maintenance is around £4,000 and another £4,000 would be needed initially to buy new IT equipment. £4,000 represents about 3.5% of the Nelson Committee’s annual budget. However, if other partners agree to contribute the cost can be spread across all those organisations.
To help us make the decision, we need to know what you think. Deadline for responses is 9th March.

Update - 20th March 2012
A meeting will take place on 30th March 2012 to discuss the matter between Pendle Borough Council and Lancashire Ccounty Council. At the Scrutiny meeting on 15th March, Nelson committee agreed to contribute £5,000 to the maintenance of the equipment if it is agreed they are turned back on.
Update - 13th April 2012
After discussions between Pendle, Burnley, Lancaster & Lancashire County Council, it was decided that a more detailed report with regards to the costs of continually running the display boards was required. It is expected that the cost will be quite high and therefore the report (including what the estimated costs would be) would need to go to the Executive meetings of each authority. The report will be presented at the first Pendle Executive meeting after the elections on 24th May 2012.
